Supported Living Services — Common Questions

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about SLS funding, eligibility, and how care works in Orange County.

Supported Living Services (SLS) is a California Department of Developmental Services (DDS) program that helps adults with developmental disabilities live independently in their own homes or apartments. Rather than living in a group home or institution, SLS clients receive personalized support in the community — on their own terms, in their own space.

To qualify for SLS in Orange County, you must:

  • Be an adult (18 years or older)
  • Have a qualifying developmental disability (e.g., intellectual disability, autism, cerebral palsy, epilepsy)
  • Be a client of the Regional Center of Orange County (RCOC)
  • Choose to live or want to live in your own home or apartment

If you're not yet connected with RCOC, Bright Care Living can help guide you through the referral process.

SLS is funded through the Regional Center of Orange County (RCOC) using state and federal dollars. For most eligible clients, there is no out-of-pocket cost for SLS supports. Once you're approved as a Regional Center client, your service coordinator will work with you to develop an Individual Program Plan (IPP) that outlines the supports you need and how they will be funded.

SLS can include a wide range of supports depending on the individual's needs and their IPP, such as:

  • Personal care and daily living skills training
  • Assistance finding and maintaining housing
  • Money management and budgeting support
  • Community integration and social activities
  • Emergency and crisis support
  • Coordination with medical, behavioral, and other providers

In a group home, multiple individuals share a licensed residential facility with on-site staff. With SLS, you live in your own home or apartment — you choose your neighborhood, your roommates (if any), and your daily routine. SLS support staff come to you based on your schedule and needs. It offers significantly more independence, privacy, and self-determination.

Getting started is simple. Contact us and we'll guide you through every step:

  • Confirm your Regional Center of Orange County (RCOC) eligibility
  • Work with your RCOC service coordinator to include SLS in your IPP
  • Request Bright Care Living Corporation as your SLS vendor
  • We'll conduct an intake and match you with the right support staff
