What Is Supported Living Services (SLS) and Who Qualifies in Orange County?

If you or a loved one has a developmental disability and dreams of living independently, Supported Living Services (SLS) may be the key to making that a reality. In California, SLS is a Regional Center-funded program designed to help adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) live in their own homes — on their own terms.

What Are Supported Living Services (SLS)?

Supported Living Services is a person-centered program that provides individualized support to adults with developmental disabilities so they can live in their own home or apartment — not in a group facility. Support is built around each person's Individual Program Plan (IPP) and is designed to promote independence, dignity, and community participation.

What Does SLS Include?

  • Money management and budgeting assistance
  • Personal hygiene and self-care coaching
  • Health and medical appointment support
  • Community integration and mobility training
  • Meal planning, nutrition, and meal prep
  • Self-advocacy and self-direction skills
  • Emergency preparedness and safe environment support
  • 24-hour on-call emergency response availability

Who Qualifies for SLS in California?

To qualify for Supported Living Services in California, an individual must:

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Have a qualifying developmental disability (autism, intellectual disability, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, or closely related condition)
  • Be a client of a Regional Center in California
  • Express a desire to live independently in their own home

Funding for SLS is provided through the regional center system under the Lanterman Developmental Disabilities Services Act.
